Fossil Ridge High School has extended its Science Bowl dominance for the third year in a row to clinch this year’s Colorado High School Science Bowl, defeating second-place finisher Fairview High School in the first in-person competition since 2019.

Hosted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Education team, the annual Science Bowl challenges teams of high school students to test their knowledge of science and engineering in a rapid-fire, quiz-bowl format. The teams compete in a double-elimination tournament, answering questions on topics like physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and mathematics.

This year’s competition, held on October 21, 2023, at NREL’s Golden campus, saw Fossil Ridge High School emerge victorious after several rounds of intense competition. The team, represented by Sophie Wang, Jackson Dryg, Kary Fang, Colin Magelky, and Quentin Perez-Wahl, has been working and winning together for years. Sophie and Jackson were on the 2021 winning team, while Colin, Quentin, Jackson, and Kary were all part of the 2020 National Middle School Science Bowl champion team.

Their years of dedicated practice and teamwork paid off, as they navigated through the challenging questions and emerged as champions. The team will now represent the state of Colorado at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., to compete for the national title against students from 64 high school regions.

NREL, a national laboratory dedicated to DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, has been hosting the Colorado regional Science Bowl for over three decades. This year’s event drew participation from over 150 students from 20 high schools across the state.

NREL Education Outreach Coordinator Tom Mason, who has been involved with the Science Bowl for over a decade, commented on the importance of the competition in fostering STEM interest among young minds. “It’s always exciting to see the energy and enthusiasm of the students competing in the Science Bowl,” he said. “NREL is proud to host this event and help encourage the next generation of scientists and engineers.

The 33rd Colorado High School Science Bowl was a resounding success, showcasing the talent and dedication of Colorado’s high school students in the fields of science and engineering. Fossil Ridge High School’s victory is a testament to their hard work and their pas
